RA-2980: MUSEUM LITERACY

This course explores the unique relationship
between object, visitor and museum, and how each
agent contributes to the interpretive museum
experience. Classes offer a behind the scenes look
at museum activity while considering the broader
role of museums in society. Site visits, case
studies and contemporary readings from the field
of museum studies provide a framework for
understanding and critically analyzing the museum
as both object and context for display. Utilizing
current models for "reading" images and objects,
students will explore the intersection of verbal,
visual, and museum "literacies," building a
transferable skill set for museums of all
disciplines. While considering the position of
museums within the larger framework of "art" and
"culture," students will observe a contemporary
portrait of museum work, supported by an
evolutionary scaffolding of careers in the field.
