RANT-1153: JESUS AND THE MOVIES
Does cinema bring something new to our
understanding of Jesus? Combining theology, art
history and cinema studies, this course examines
15 Jesus movies made between 1912 and 2004, plus
examples of non-biblical Christ figures, showing
how perennial issues of interpretation and
representation are both repeated and transformed
by the medium of film. Class time includes film
clips, lecture and discussion, exploring classic
questions of biblical interpretation, Christology
and iconography, as well as our understandings and
images of Jesus. Issues specific to the genre are
also examined, including the challenge of
representing Christ's human and divine natures in
a "realistic" medium, and the recurring charges of
anti-Semitism. Requirements include two short
papers, a film review, and either a final paper or
a short video depicting the student's own "movie
jesus."
