RASP-2068: DEVOTIONAL POETRY
An examination of selected lyric poems so as to
illuminate the spiritual struggles and insights of
their authors. Through close readings and special
attention to dynamic effects, students may find
that some of these remarkable poems draw them into
spiritual experiences and insights of their own.
Particular emphasis will be given to poems about
absence and alienation which nevertheless serve as
instruments of presence and reconciliation.
Selections are from Psalms, Song of Songs, John of
the Cross, Donne, Herbert, Dickinson, Hopkins,
Eliot, Stevens, Levertov, Wilbur, and others.
Evaluation method: Four 1-2 page reflection
papers, one presentation, one 8-10 page reflection
paper. [20 max enrollment; Auditors with Faculty
permission]
